Why I Want to Build a MoonBase

I am an extreme environment architectural designer, who spent a year living in a simulated Martian habitat experiencing ICE environments and wrote a doctoral dissertation on the architecture required to make these projects work for long-term habitation. Getting the species multi-planetary, trading our squabbles for the desire to explore the universe, and starting the diaspora is the greatest goal we could have. The Moon is an excellent starting point to push off into the rest of the solar system

I'm Passionate About

I'm a huge fan of space exploration, of course, having dedicated my professional career to advancing our place in the cosmos. Nothing is more exciting than creating ships or bases which can help us reach other worlds. I also love more traditional architecture, art, and learning ukulele. I'm a frequent traveler, have lived in many different countries, and love just getting out into the world and finding new places. Coffee is also a passion, and camping is a great way to escape the world.

Professional Biography

Tristan Bassingthwaighte is a recent graduate of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and Tongji University in Shanghai. He holds a masters and doctorate of architecture, with a dissertation specializing on the design of habitats for the long-duration inhabitation of the ICE environments of Earth and outer space. He was also the crew architect for HI-SEAS IV, a year long Mars simulation on Mauna Loa attempting to discover the social and psychological issues inherent with the extreme isolation and confinement of life in space or other worlds. He is currently working for DeepSpaceEcology LLC, as their staff architectural designer, working on the design of habitats for other worlds. His dream is to become a full fledged space architect, working to create the habitats needed to take humanity to other worlds and establish a permanent presence there, and someday to go himself.

Outside of design for outer space, he plays the ukulele and has a fledgling art business based around goofy shirt designs.

How I and/or my organization will contribute to building a MoonBase. - 250 Max Characters

My specialty is the design of habitats in environments like the Moon or Mars, I also work for DeepSpaceEcology and we are attempting to make bases like this resource-independent. I would ensure people are having their environmental needs met.

Let's Talk About

ICE habitats, AR, VR, greenhouses

My Areas of Expertise

My expertise is addressing the sociological and psychological issues of inhabitants living in ICE environments through design, creating interiors that can mitigate the stressors of living in a place as dangerous as Antarctica or the Moon. This extends to base programming, basic construction, and methods for including the greenhouse or plants within the structure. How to make a habitat a home, essentially, and facilitate crew harmony and productivity.
